Default Advice for "Don't Fear the Reapers" noob

So honestly, I've read all the guides, watched all the videos, and I still have my doubts about this quest. I've been down in the UW perhaps a dozen or so times, not too many, and I've soloed farmed parts of it on my rit and used to trap ice wastes on my ranger when it was the thing to do. Reaper looks like the most impossible quest, but I know people do it because so many people are skele farming.

How about some advice for us uber noobs who don't intimately know every single nook and crannie of the UW. The video I watched had some guy running through like he's taking a jog through his neighborhood. Sure it looked easy because he's probably clocked hundreds of hours down there.

So... I would love to hear from someone who's just finished it that doesn't know the UW like it's their second home. What did you do? Red rock candy, Essence of celerity? Did you keep a map handy? Did you find some places to rest and get your bearings. (Something I'll probably have to do). Let's for once hear from some new people, not old hands.

I push the boat out and use 2 cupcakes when I do this quest. I really, really hate it due the rubberbanding 'feature' and just want it over with to progress the chain.

I start with Bone Pits each time because it's where I'm most likely to die because of the degen. If I die there then I haven't wasted too much time.

I made it for the 1st try without any consumable, without ever done fr UW, so it's not so hard.

All you need to know is which foes can hurt you in range and which don't.
Save influence to them.
Use skill 3 (10sec lasting KD) for groups of size 1-3 mobs.
Use skill 2 for meele groups.
Influence for big groups of casters. (Coldfires, Terrorwebs, some Treshers, some foes in planes)
If you find it too hard, wait at a safe place until influence recharges.
If you still fail, use BU. 4k is worth it, isn't it?

If your really having trouble pop an essence of celerity. With the reduced recharge you can keep mad king's influence up constantly. Bone pits is the hardest part, so do it first. Use click to move instead of keyboard only when going past mobs to help avoid rubberbands.

If you just can't do it, you can always buy/craft 1 or 2 essence of clerity and spam the skill that makes all creatures within earshot friendly. (forgot the name..)

If you do this you can just walk your way through the underworld.

use the 90% snare on melee mobs close to each other.
use the 10 sec knockdown skill on small groups when 90% snare is on recharge or if it is a spellcaster.

use the ims to on recharge or after usage of one of the above.

use mad kings influence on large mobs that cannot be disabled using KD or snare, or on sudden pops ( the infamous chaos plains pop comes to mind)

Tab-3-Tab-3-Tab-3.
All the time.
2 only for grouped melees.
1 on recharge, unless you need extra speed in a few seconds (to outrun some mobs).
4 - there are three ways, really. Save it for harder parts (as well as a fail-safe, when you get down to a bit over 50% hp, 4 is your emergency god mode button), spam it on recharge (of course only if there are enough mobs around to make it useful, but even use it against four aatxes) or finish the whole run using only 4.
That option takes a lot of time, but is probably the easiest and the most noob-friendly. Generally speaking, hit 4, run past a group or two, get into a safe spot (the patrols move slowly, so it's easy to watch the aggro bubble and generally avoid mobs) and wait until it recharges. Use 3/2 in case of emergency or if you absolutely have to flee into less threatening mobs (aka melees). When 4 recharges, pop it and run forward. It's really hard to fail that way, but again, it takes a lot of time - though starting out like that might be a good idea to regain some self-confidence.
Also, use and follow the wiki's map for this quest - http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/File:...eapers_map.jpg

I used this quest to get familiar with the Underworld last year. I had been on a full run earlier, but i pretty much just blindly followed the leader. Still, if you follow the wiki's map and go on carefully, actually using your skills and watching aggro, it's pretty easy.

2 years ago, I failed forever and in my anger resorted to use an Essence of Celerity for this quest for all of my characters. Last year, I did the same or ignored the quests, I don't remember.

This year, I did "Something wicked this way comes" with all of my 10 characters first to get routine with the skills. In the end I was able to run to King Frozenwind without stop in 2 minutes (/age).

After that I did "Don't fear the reapers", no consumables. The first run went perfectly.

Skill 2 against melee groups, skill 3 against everything, skill 4 on emergency or for multiple mobs at once.

Important: interrupt (throw down) the hexing casters (Mindblades, Dead Threshers, Dead Collectos) before they are able to hex you with the long lasting health degeneration skills. You survive one set of hexes, but be prepared to avoid a renewal from an approaching mob. It was surprisingly easy this year.

By the way, I have 2 monitors on my PC and have the wiki map open on the second monitor.

drkn pretty much got it right...If you're inexperienced take your time...Bone pits is the toughest, but you can screw up if you panic against aatxes/mindblade popup/terrorwebs

Tab 3 usually works great, don't 100% rely on it sometimes you overtab by accident or the tab doesn't switch to the right enemy. Practice I guess. But 3 is going to be your main skill. I only use sticky feet skill for graspings/aatxes/smite crawlers. Terrorwebs are easily handled by knockdown skill, but you can use mad kings influence. Bone pits can be run at full speed if you like abit of risk, but you may find it easier to wait and use mad kings influence for all of it, parking at safe spots for the cd.

A sub 20 minute time for the quest without consumables is very easy once you get the hang of it. I go chamber/vale/bone pits/chaos plains/spawning pools/mountain/ice wastes in that order.

And if all else fails, essence of celerity, you have little excuse to fail other than connection problems. Lots of people have problems with this quest...I always found it easy and I've only beat dhuum once. and don't really venture much outside chamber clearing/farming.

I was never able to complete this quest even WITH the consumables (tab 3 just didnt help enough)....but with them most people are able to complete it. (those of us who can not have given up asking for help).
So if you find you are not able to complete it--you are not alone, the rest of us are just very, very quiet now about it (and the rewards just arent great enough to continue to try).

Best tip i have: to do the quest, get up in the middle of the nite, at some low traffic hrs on the server to avoid the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing rubber banding

Best is probably just to use some consumables like Essence of Celerity or Red Rock Candy. Start with Bone Pit. Hardest part for me there was not getting to the reaper, it was returning back. After a few failed attempts I used EoC and succeeded. Although was down to 4 hp at one time lol.

Actually the Bone Pits is quite easy if you time them correctly. There's few stop point u can use and there's few points where u have to back off until your 4th skill are recharged.

I was down to 3 more easy reapers but lagged and died. It was like wth experiences and I gave up. Probably will try again tonight. :S

Got it on my third try yesterday, no cons, and I hardly set foot in UW. I died the two first times because I was overly cocky. Bone Pits is the hardest imo but otherwise there are plenty of location where you can just wait until your skills recharge. Take it slow, make sure you don't "tab-3" too quickly or you might hit it while it's still recharging.

I made it on the first try without much knowledge of UW (ive cleared it once and failed to clear it a few times). I used the map on the wiki and used 2 birthday cupcakes for the constant speedboost. I started with bone pits since that place is the hardest according to the wiki. I made it by kding all monsters (or using the influence skill) and taking time to regen hp wherever possible since the monsters have a lot of degen if you dont interupt it.

I almost died at one point when I was getting blocked in aatxes and some more monsters, but I was half expecting it and immediatly used the mad kings influence when I saw damage numbers appear over my head (when on my screen I was long gone from the monsters ofcourse).

I can stand in Chantry of Secrets for hours with a green latency indicator, the moment I enter the U/W for the quest it goes to orange and stays there. Twenty attempts at the quest now all with candles or EoS and every time I'm doing fine then rubber-band back into damage from invisible mobs and die.

Reward for "Don't Fear the Reapers" itself is not huge... but the repeatable follow-up quest "Every Bit Helps" has rewards that ARE great enough to justify persevering.

I'm getting about 390 ToT bags an hour doing that on a single account, 680 an hour if I use both my accounts simultaneously. That quest is also an easy way to make a legendary survivor 100% risk-free.

I get that too - but rubber banding is easily avoided. Just take your time, look for the places where a bottleneck could get you body-blocked by knocked-down foes etc... back off until the bottle-neck is clear, or time your knockdowns so that there is a gap between foes. And click the ground to move, in those places.

I finally did the bone pits without any cons. Used cons to speed up rest but wanted to see if i could do it.

Speed past any mobs into the cave/hallway.
When you 1st enter the cave/hallway leading to the bone pits there are a patrol of 2. I wait up top and use skill 4 on them. Run past and there's single guy partolling at the bottom of hill. Wait and follow him back towards bridge. Hopefully you will catch them all clumped up there and use skill 4.
Run over and past the bridge then go towards the left to see about patrols and recharge skill 4. Then head for reaper. There is 2-3 groups on the way to him. Watch how they patrol and you will find a couple of hiding places. Use skill 4 run to reaper.

On way out head back the way you came or go towards the right if patroled. Either way its safer to let them patrol and save up skill 4. Run back down hit 4 if needed and hide. Wait for partols (2-3) head to bridge and size it up. You don't want to tangle with more than 1. Degen will kill you so if they are clumped use skill 4 and run. If the single patrol dude was not there, use skill 3 when you meet him and knock him down. Be sure to recharge skill 4 for the final 2 that patrol top to bottom of hill.

Hope it helps and don't assume candy or bu will help you enough to not use strategy. Going slow and watching how they patrol will save you a lot of rage.
